  • "Peril in the means of its diffusion": William Godwin on Truth and Social
           Media
    • Abstract: "Let us imagine to ourselves a number of individuals, who, having first stored their minds with reading and reflection, proceed afterwards in candid and unreserved conversation to compare their ideas. . . . We shall then have an idea of knowledge as perpetually gaining ground, unaccompanied with peril in the means of its diffusion."Throughout his fifty-year career, William Godwin remained confident in the perfectibility of human minds. This belief perplexed many of his reformist contemporaries, not because of its optimistic vision of human potential but because Godwin was profoundly cautious about how that potential could be realized. John Thelwall's acerbic summary of Godwin's authorial strategy ran as follows: to ... Read More

  • Crashing the Cathedral: Historical Reassessments of Twentieth-Century
           International Relations
    • Abstract: At the heart of mainstream International Relations (IR) scholarship today sits an uncomfortable disconnect between the conceptual apparatus by which the contemporary discipline understands the world and the historical origins of the discipline in the world. For instance, today's predominant approaches to IR as a discipline and mode of foreign policy practice were developed over the course of the early twentieth century and concretized during the period of "sustained reflection about the organization of international knowledge" that followed the Second World War.1 Key among the global problems discussed by the European and American scholars and public intellectuals engaged in these reflections was the postwar ... • The Idea of the Upelekwa: Constructing a Transcontinental Community in
           Eastern Africa, 1888–96
    • Abstract: In the late summer of 1888, Owen Makanyassa directed his corps of printers as they set to work at the printing press of the Universities' Mission to Central Africa (UMCA). They laid out the type, stretched the paper, and rolled ink onto the pages of the inaugural issue of Msimulizi (The Reporter), a Swahili-language magazine written, printed, and read by the African students and teachers of the mission. The UMCA, an Anglican mission established on Zanzibar in 1864, had by 1888 constructed a series of stations both on the island archipelago and in mainland east-central Africa. After Makanyassa—a former slave who had worked at the mission press since 1867—collected the work of his printers, the first issue was sent ... Read More

  • Perfecting Community as "One Man": Moses Ḥayim Luzzatto's Pietistic
           Confraternity in Eighteenth-Century Padua
    • Abstract: For several years during the second quarter of the eighteenth century, a handful of Jewish mystics in Padua opened their secret society to others interested but not adept in Kabbalah. The town's youngest and most charismatic kabbalist, Moses Ḥayim Luzzatto (ca. 1707–ca. 1746), led the charge while seeking to emulate and manifest the unity of God. Group protocols bound the spiritual interests of all participants as "one man" and detailed the activities necessary for fulfilling their potential as a harmonious, unified body. Drawing men of various backgrounds and abilities, Luzzatto advocated a broad-based pietism rooted in Kabbalah but applicable in all socio-economic classes as a means to attain the long-awaited ... • Technology, Law, and Annihilation: Carl Schmitt's Critique of Utopianism
    • Abstract: In the foreword to his postwar history of the law of nations, The Nomos of the Earth, Carl Schmitt warned of an "existential question confronting jurisprudence itself, which today is being crushed between theology and technology, if it does not assert the ground of its own existence in a correctly recognized and fruitful historicity."1 On the one hand, the resurgence of just war theories, from the Spanish Scholastics through contemporaries such as James Brown Scott, threatened to breach the cordon sanitaire established by Alberico Gentili's famous dictum, "Silence, theologians, in matters outside of your domain!"2 On the other, in Ex Captivitate Salus (his reflections from his internment in the period of 1945–47 ... • A Meadow that Lifts the Soul: Originality as Anthologizing in the
           Byzantine Church Interior
    • Abstract: In a well-known passage in Buildings, a survey of the emperor Justinian's public works, Procopius of Caesarea (ca. 500–ca. 562), a historian during the early Eastern Roman Empire, describes the interior of the Great Church, or Hagia Sophia, in Istanbul.1 Procopius marvels over the columns (kiones) which display impost capitals with stylized floriate decoration.2 In Procopius's eyes the columns seem to stretch upward to the dome, which appears to hang weightlessly in the air, as if suspended on an invisible gold string.3 He confesses that he is unable to put into words how beautifully light reflects off the marble: "One might imagine that one had come upon a meadow with its flowers in full bloom. For one would ... Read More
