  • Above the Law: James's "Scenic Method" in The Spoils of Poynton
    • Abstract: The year is 1915. Henry James finds a volume left for him at his London club bearing the curious title Boon. Purporting to be a posthumous collection of the writings of one George Boon, the volume contains an essay that catches James's eye: "Of Art, of Literature, of Mr. Henry James." Little investigation is required to discern that the real author is H. G. Wells, with whom James had a cordial if slightly competitive relationship. To James's dismay, however, the essay contains a now-famous denunciation of James's literary enterprise: "The thing his novel is about is always there. It is like a church lit but without a congregation to distract you, with every light and line focused on the high altar. And on the ... Read More

  • Henry James and Neuroscience: Cognitive Universals and Cultural
           Differences
    • Abstract: A Jamesian sentence and an fMRI machine might seem to have little in common other than their technical complexity and the fact that they need an expert to operate them. But both are instruments for registering the workings of consciousness, which, if you know how to use them and can appreciate what they can (and cannot) tell you, may be valuable tools for understanding various paradoxes of embodied cognition. Neither provides direct, unmediated access to consciousness, the mind, or the brain. Both offer only an indirect representation of the relationship between our embodied minds and the world. Indirect representations are all we have, however. That is something that a reader of Henry James understands. The ... Read More

  • Foreign Inflections and Infections: Language Clashes in Henry James's The
           Tragic Muse
    • Abstract: [T]he Englishman's habit of not being effusive still prevailed with him after his years of exposure to the foreign infection.According to Eric Savoy, "In the world of Henry James, the surest sign of an expatriate's sophistication is the tendency—at once emphatic and off-hand—to sprinkle the conversational mix with French words and phrases" (196). James's own habit of sprinkling his texts with non-English words and phrases has long struck many readers as an affectation, even an infection.1 An inveterate polyglot, James regularly displays an impatience with the confines of a single language, no matter if it is his mother tongue. My aim in what follows is to challenge the assumption that the multilingual bent of ... Read More

  • Henry James's "The Aspern Papers": Between the Narrative of an Archive and
           the Archive of Narrative
    • Abstract: If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash.In Henry James's "The Aspern Papers," an anonymous editor arrives in Venice with a single goal: to pursue the letters of the great American Romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern. At the time of the novella's opening, Aspern has already been dead for many years and the letters in question belong to their recipient and his former mistress, Juliana Bordereau, an expatriate American who lives with her niece in a "dilapidated old palace" (NT 3). The narrator is so eager to obtain Aspern's correspondence that he is willing to make love to Juliana's middle-aged niece, Miss Tina, though he runs away when she offers the papers to him in exchange for marriage.1 Following his ... • The Turn of the Century: Henry James in Millennial Fiction
    • Abstract: On a bright Saturday afternoon in the late summer of 2002, two men are introduced to each other in the front parlor of Lamb House. That they have both chosen this day for their visit is surprising but not extraordinary: the National Trust opens Henry James's home to the public just two afternoons each week, and the writers, for writers they are, have good reason for wanting to make their pilgrimage before the house is closed for the season. What follows is rather more unexpected: the tenant, overhearing their conversation, unhooks the rope at the foot of the staircase and invites the writers to follow (Tóibín, "Haunting" 19). He shows them upstairs to the green room, where the floorboards creak with the ghost of ... Read More

  • Henry James's Style of Retrospect: Late Personal Writings, 1890–1915 by
Oliver Herford, and: Henry James' andere Szene: Zum Dramatismus des
modernen Romans by Sophie Witt (review)
    • Abstract: In A Small Boy and Others Henry James casts the famous "Marie" episode from his childhood as an unforgettable scene in the making as if in belated defiance of an adult's injunction. He recalled his cousin Marie protesting against being sent to bed and noted in particular how her mother, Aunt Elizabeth, had done her best to nip the tantrum in the bud by saying "I insist on your not making a scene" (152). What had been prevented back then became an embryonic scene (a scene in spe) in James's memoir, and, as such, it surfaces in both books reviewed in this essay. Sophie Witt, who builds much of her argument around James's idea of the scenic method, was clearly inspired by this proto-scene to trace interrelations of ... Read More

  • Henry James and American Painting by Colm Tóibín, Marc Simpson,
           and Declan Kiely (review)
    • Abstract: I will preface my review of the exhibition catalog with an account of the exhibition, June 9 through September 10, 2017, that gave rise to it. It might be said that the constraints of mounting an exhibition in one large room presaged limitations in the catalog. Following the Morgan Library and Museum's well-received exhibitions dedicated to homebody literary geniuses, Charlotte Brontë and Emily Dickinson, curators and staff attempted to encompass the cosmopolitan visual culture of Henry James. The curators required an organizing theme that would limit the scope of the exhibition to a manageable size. Even so, "Henry James and American Painting" seems a bit of a misnomer. The artists featured in the exhibit were ... Read More

  • "A combination of the sublime and the ridiculous"
    • Abstract: The use of opera as part of the narrative in fiction developed markedly during the nineteenth century and continued well into the twentieth century, with several contemporary writers still regarding opera as useful for their particular purposes. In literature, the performative, intellectual, and cultural role of opera is depicted by using a particular aspect of performance: usually part of an operatic scene but also in the way the spaces in which the performances take place are used, most particularly the opera box, an important site of the dominant male gaze. It is important to remember that music making in the nineteenth century was both visual and aural, the last period in which this was the case. Susan McClary ... Read More

  • Henry James and the Culture of Consumption by Miranda El-Rayess (review)
    • Abstract: Among the scholarly works that investigate Henry James's attitude toward and understanding of the socio-economic developments and transformations of his time, Miranda El-Rayess's Henry James and the Culture of Consumption collects and illuminates the many references to consumption in the novels, short stories, and essays. It pays specific attention to the growing presence of new kinds of shoppers as well as mechanisms of advertising in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. This monograph provides fresh readings of The Princess Casamassima, The Wings of the Dove, The Golden Bowl, The Ambassadors, and many of the short stories. Detailed and erudite, Henry James and the Culture of Consumption is ... Read More
