  • Henry James: An Alien’s “History” of America by Martha
           Banta (review)
    • Abstract: Martha Banta’s first book on Henry James, Henry James and the Occult: The Great Extension, appeared in 1972 and remains an essential part of the secondary literature on James’s supernatural fiction. In the years since the appearance of Henry James and the Occult, Banta has published six other monographs on a wide array of topics. She has earned, and with good reason, numerous accolades, and the variety of topics that her books have covered reveal her to be a cultural critic in the true sense of the term. But in spite of the significance of that first book, none of the books since 1972 has focused primarily on James. And yet Banta has always remained a regular participant at conferences on James and contributed ... Read More

  • Writing Back: American Expatriates’ Narratives of Return by Susan
           Winnett (review)
    • Abstract: Writing Back is very easy to admire. It’s only a bit little less easy to like.Writing Back is easy to admire for Susan Winnett’s thinking about and writing on four narratives of return, in which Winnett locates the “‘great difference’ that both separates and mutually constitutes America and the returning expatriate” (3). The four narratives are: Henry James’s The American Scene, in which Winnett shows that “[h]omecoming … foils the neat ratio between distance and perspective, on the one hand, and familiarity and affection, on the other” (3); Harold E. Stearns’s The Street I Know, which “opens up the possibility of a critical commentary on not only the canonical version of the expatriate experience of the 1920s but ... Read More

  • Literature and Film, Dispositioned: Thought, Location, World by Alice
           Gavin (review)
    • Abstract: In Literature and Film, Dispositioned, Alice Gavin wishes to offer a counter-narrative to that “optimistic” narrative of modernity that claims that modernist narrative and aesthetic techniques can expose a world of interiority that may be said to exist by virtue of the invention of those very techniques. Instead, Gavin argues that the poster child for modernist narrative strategies—free indirect discourse—when deployed scriptively in fiction and visually in film, renders a paradox, as it “involves both a disposition (a subjective temperament) and a dispositioning (subjectivity’s displacement)” (7). For Gavin, the venerable technique of free indirect discourse in its modernist versions results in a recognition that ... Read More

  • Breaking the “Mould” of The Ambassadors
    • Abstract: The affair—I mean the affair of life—couldn’t, no doubt, have been different for me; for it’s at the best a tin mould, either fluted and embossed, with ornamental excrescences, or else smooth and dreadfully plain, into which, a helpless jelly, one’s consciousness is poured—so that one “takes” the form, as the great cook says, and is more or less compactly held by it; one lives in fine as one can. Still, one has the illusion of freedom; therefore don’t be, like me, without the memory of that illusion. The metaphor of the tin mold, from Book 5 of The Ambassadors (1903), is the centerpiece of a famous monologue that Henry James calls the “germ” and the “essence” of his “best” novel (xxx, xxix, xxxi). In this ... Read More

  • Mocking the Master: Early Responses to The Sacred Fount
    • Abstract: Existing bibliographical studies provide extensive information about the reception of The Sacred Fount (1901), but it is now possible to extend our knowledge of the early responses to James’s most controversial and enigmatic novel. In Henry James: The Critical Heritage (1968), Roger Gard reprinted an unsigned review of The Sacred Fount in the Spectator, a review by Cornelia Atwood Pratt in the New York Critic, and a review by Harry T. Peck in the U.S. Bookman. In 1975, Beatrice Ricks gave publication details of these and seventeen other reviews of The Sacred Fount in Henry James: A Bibliography of Secondary Works. James W. Gargano reprinted the Peck review and added unsigned reviews from the Pall Mall Gazette, the ... Read More

  • Henry James’s Impressionistic Satire of the Decadent Movement in the
           Yellow Book
    • Abstract: Henry James published three stories in Henry Harland’s journal, the Yellow Book: “The Death of the Lion” (April 1894), “The Coxon Fund” (July 1894), and “The Next Time” (July 1895). These stories have tended to slip between the cracks of slowly burgeoning criticism on James’s engagements with the Aesthetic and Decadent Movements, which has focused mainly on Aestheticist themes and characters in James’s work up to and including The Tragic Muse in 18901 and James’s Decadent style in works after The Spoils of Poynton in 1897.2 However, they illustrate one of James’s most direct addresses to the principle of “art for art’s sake” and its place within these twin movements in the short period between 1890 and 1895 when ... • Experimental Maisie: Zolien Naturalism and the Compulsion to Convert
    • Abstract: In one of the better-known episodes from his 1913 autobiography, A Small Boy and Others (1913), Henry James recalls his father’s injunction:It is quite for me as if the authors of our being and guardians of our youth had virtually said to us but one thing, directed our course but by one word, though constantly repeated: Convert, convert, convert!Side-stepping for a moment the tangled host of religious, financial, and epistemological connotations embedded in Henry James Sr.’s imperative, we might ask what a reiterable conversion would look like.1 How does the theology of the “one thing,” the “one word,” get thrice multiplied into the dynamic processes of conversion? Why, moreover, does this process of “constant” ... Read More

  • Poynton: Notes on the Management of a Spoiled Identity
    • Abstract: Henry James put great stock in intelligence, and, like vengeful nerds everywhere, he was not above taking the odd potshot at the beautiful athlete endowed with a distinctly ordinary mind. Consider the philistine arriviste Mona Brigstock in The Spoils of Poynton (1897). As Mona concludes her initial visit to Poynton, the exquisite estate entailed to Owen Gereth, the young heir’s recently widowed mother flings a trashy “female magazine” at her potential daughter-in-law (57). Despite the dismissive lob, Mona dexterously leaps and snags the publication in mid-air:Mrs. Gereth, delivering herself from the doorstep, had tossed the periodical higher in air than was absolutely needful—tossed it toward the carriage the ... • After the Year of Henry James: The Undermining of Authority in Short
Fictions by Cynthia Ozick and Joyce Carol Oates
    • Abstract: “How did you ever dare write a portrait of a lady? Fancy any woman’s attempting a portrait of a gentleman!”Among more than a dozen recent fictional works that center on, invoke, or in some way involve Henry James, critical and popular attention has tended to coalesce around the novels—and the narrative—of what David Lodge has called “The Year of Henry James,” 2004. J. Russell Perkin, Cora Kaplan, and Daniel Hannah have done notable scholarship articulating the variations between Colm Tóibín’s The Master and Lodge’s Author, Author, both biographical fictions published nearly simultaneously. Less critical attention has been paid to fictional versions of James by contemporary female creative writers. In this essay, I ... Read More

  • Review Essay: Henry James and Transatlantic Modernism
    • Abstract: The traditional view of Henry James as a pivotal figure in the emergence of literary modernism has recently expanded toward a consideration of his position in the broader cultural context of modernity. Book-length studies have appeared of his responses to the urban sphere (McKee), the culture of consumption (El-Rayess), and the rise of the illustrated magazine (Tucker). The Henry James Society recently convened a conference on “Henry James and the Material World.” The transatlantic experience remains central to such inquiries, and studies such as Peter Brooks’s Henry James Goes to Paris and Susan Winnett’s Narratives of Return have begun to examine the material dimensions of James’s travels between Europe and the ... • The Europeans by Henry James, and: The Ambassadors by Henry James (review)
    • Abstract: The publication of the first two volumes of the first collection of the “complete fiction” of Henry James is indeed an event for James scholars and the general public. When completed, this thirty-four volume edition will include all of James’s novels (vols. 1–22), his short fiction (vols. 23–32), his prefaces to the New York Edition (vol. 33), and his notebooks (vol. 34). At average current prices of around $100 for The Europeans and $150 for The Ambassadors, the complete edition at today’s prices will probably total more than $4,250, but the cost will be well worth the investment for research libraries, the James scholar, even the devoted reader. Under the general editorship of Michael Anesko, Tamara Follini ... Read More
