  • Medieval Narratives: Living On
    • Abstract: What we understand today by the term “narrative” is not universal or transparent. Nor is the cultural work that narratives do. That work varies across different cultures and at different times. According to the OED, the two main current definitions of narrative are the “spoken or written account of connected events; a story,” and the “practice or art of telling stories.” The first definition highlights the emplotting aspect of narrative, namely that it does more than describe events because it makes connections between them, while the second points to the narrator’s deployment of technique, expertise, and conventions within a defined social situation. Storytelling not only requires skill but also presupposes an ... Read More

  • A Story about Song: Narrative Ethics versus Lyric Isolation in Charles
           d’Orléans’s English Lyrics
    • Abstract: Emmanuel Levinas’s “Reality and Its Shadow,” published in 1948, seems in many regards like a bid to outdo Plato in its suspicion of poets. Where Plato would have the poets exiled from his utopian Republic for the alluring potency of their false imitations of reality, Levinas’s concern is not for the misleading power of poetic art. He warns instead against its passivity.1 For Levinas, poetry—and art in general—does not provide any kind of knowledge, either true or false; it, he says, “is the very event of obscuring.”2 In Levinas’s conception, art withdraws its audience from active involvement in social concerns: hence, for Levinas, the problem of art. Anticipating his more elaborate exposition in 1961’s ... Read More

  • Memories, Dreams, and Fictions: The Liminality of Mudarra and Embedded
Narratives in the Legend of the Seven Infantes of Lara
    • Abstract: When characters interrupt a literary work by telling another narrative from their own subjective point of view, their accounts not only disrupt the general story, but they also call into question its narrative procedures and our ability to trust it. Embedded narratives bring together different voices, times, and levels of authority, and this power to connect diverse elements can shed light on other ambiguous and problematic aspects of the literary work, such as its genre or its intent. My purpose here is to analyze some of the embedded narratives that appear in two versions of the Castilian epic legend of the seven infantes of Lara, one from the late thirteenth century and the other from the mid-fourteenth ... • Beowulf ’s Poetics of Absorption: Narrative Syntax and the Illusion of
Stability in the Fight with Grendel’s Mother
    • Abstract: In Beowulf, the last survivor stands before the barrow in which he has just interred his kin (lines 2236–2246).1 Absorbed in grief, he then speaks his famous lament for his lost people. The poem allows us partly to imagine the survivor and his world as his lament unfolds, but it also bars us from becoming fully affectively engaged with him by positioning him as alone (he has no audience, and he does not address us; we only overhear him) and by setting his elegy in syntactically negative, imagistically sketchy forms (lines 2247–2254). “Heald þū nū, hrūse, nū hæleð ne m(ō)stan, / eorla ǣhte” [Earth, hold now the possessions of earls, what heroes cannot] (lines 2247–2248), the survivor opens, but in this ... • The Celestial Knight: Evoking the First Crusade in Odo of Deuil’s De
Profectione Ludovici VII in Orientem and in the Anonymous Historia de
           Expeditione Friderici Imperatoris
    • Abstract: Writing in the early twelfth century, the Benedictine theologian and historian Guibert of Nogent asserted: “Si filii Israel miraculis quae ante eos egerit dominus michi inferentur obiectis” [If someone cites the sons of Israel and the miracles God performed for them, I shall offer something more miraculous].1 Guibert was referring to the sequence of events known to posterity as the First Crusade, events which are presented throughout his revealingly titled crusade history Dei Gesta per Francos as a divine miracle in their own right, enacted by God through the participants of the expedition two decades earlier. • Hermeneutic Intervention: Influencing Affective Devotional Practices at
the Source in Fray Hernando de Talavera’s De las cerimonias
    • Abstract: Fray Hernando de Talavera is perhaps most well known as the first archbishop of Granada and confessor to Isabel of Castile. Born around 1430 and passing away in 1507, he was also a scholar, a Hieronymite monk, prior of Our Lady of Prado, bishop of Ávila, and a victim of the Inquisition. Talavera was active in Castile during a time when Christ’s humanity, particularly the Passion, began prompting new forms of affective devotion throughout the kingdom. Jessica Boon speaks of a “devotional shift over the course of the fifteenth century,” a shift that included “imaginative meditation on the events of Christ’s life[,] . . . a concomitant elevation in private prayer,” and “embodied devotion.”1 While such ... • Alternative Possibility in Fourteenth-Century Philosophy and the
Development of Allegorical Narrative in the Work of Robert Holcot and
           Thomas Hoccleve
    • Abstract: Imagining the various alternative possibilities that might happen in the future fascinated as well as disturbed fourteenth-century philosophers and poets, just as it does popular science writers and science fiction authors today. But unlike modern novels, a large portion of late-medieval literary production was engaged in the retelling of already existing stories, the outlines and outcomes of which were not open to change.1 How, then, within a fixed narrative framework, could the notion of alternative possibility—so central to human experience, and so rigorously disputed in late-medieval theology—be presented or conveyed?2 The objective of this article is to challenge the view that traditional forms of ... • The Cartulary of the Abbey of Prémontré: A Story of Conflict and
           Resolution
    • Abstract: Monastic cartularies offer important evidence for the study of an institution’s social and economic history. Compiled of papal bulls, privileges, donations, confirmations, and property transactions, the textual evidence found in cartulary charters can narrate the growth and decline of an abbey’s revenues and rights over the course of decades. It can also recount the stability and fluidity of social relationships with lay patrons, other religious institutions, and dependent houses. In addition to charter content, the process of selecting and organizing charters for cartulary construction provides further insights into a religious institution’s historical context.1 For the cartulary of the Abbey Saint-Jean Baptiste ... • Rereading the Story of the City of Cherson and the Maiden Gykia in De
administrando imperio as Arts of Rule Narrative
    • Abstract: The story of the castle or city of Cherson (located in the southern Crimea) and the Maiden Gykia serves as the concluding chapter of the significant tenth-century treatise on Byzantine imperial governance, known since the sixteenth century by its Latin title De administrando imperio (henceforth Dai).1 Compiled and in part directly authored by Konstantinos VII (Konstantinos Porphyrogennetos) (913–959), Dai was intended as a confidential handbook on Byzantine diplomacy and foreign and security practices for the heir to the imperial throne. It provided pragmatic and systematic descriptions—albeit interwoven with antiquarian information of questionable validity—about the governance of the state and various ... Read More

  • Two New Approaches to Exploring Monstrous Landscapes in Beowulf and
           Blickling Homily XVII
    • Abstract: The many similarities in the descriptions of the monstrous landscapes in Blickling Homily XVII and Beowulf have long fueled debate among scholars about the nature of their connection. Blickling Homily XVII, also called To Sancte Michaheles Mæssan, is part of one of the largest and oldest collections of anonymous homilies composed in Old English prose.1 The last 200 words of Blickling Homily XVII offer a vivid description of St. Paul’s vision of hell as a dark and frosty wilderness populated by menacing trees, water monsters, and diabolical wolves roaming in hell’s icy environs. Similarly, Grendel’s mere in Beowulf is a place of punishment haunted by water serpents, moss-covered trees, icy rocks, and steep ... Read More

  • “Our Stories” and “Your Stories”: Narrating the Passion and the
Resurrection in Thomas Bradwardine’s De causa Dei
    • Abstract: Stories can play a powerful role in theological discourse. In Thomas Bradwardine’s De causa Dei,1 they appear as links that associate in turn Jews and Christians, pagans and Christians, pagans and Jews, and pagans, Jews, and Christians. Their role is twofold. Stories primarily serve the apologetic purpose of De causa Dei: their concordant sentences need only be compiled into one coherent whole in order to convince the reluctant unbeliever, heretic, or mistaken people of the existence of an eternal God.2 Secondary to this function, stories testify that divine history is manifold and universal; it started long before the prophecies of the Old Testament foretold the advent of Christ and did not end with his ...
