  • Why Colin Clout Came Back: English Reformation Literature and Edmund
           Spenser’s Late Work
    • Abstract: In 1595, some 16 years after his debut in The Shepheardes Calender, Colin Clout, Edmund Spenser’s pastoral persona, returned to print as an Irish shepherd in Spenser’s eclectic epyllion, Colin Clouts Come Home Againe. One year later, in 1596, Colin Clout appeared in The Faerie Queene, once again as a shepherd in the recognizably Irish setting of the pastoral cantos of book 6. The return of Colin to Spenser’s verse after such a long absence is one of the more puzzling aspects of Spenser’s career, since The Shepheardes Calender encourages its readers to see it as a youthful, preparatory exercise for a linear, careerist development from pastoral to epic. Why bring back a figure and a genre that suggested youth ... Read More

  • Licentious Rhymers: John Donne and the Late-Elizabethan Couplet Revival
    • Abstract: To modern readers accustomed to encountering couplets in the poems of John Dryden, Alexander Pope, and their imitators, the form seems to represent the Enlightenment in miniature. The relentless chime of the end-rhymes and the perfect balance of the clauses seem tailor-made to transmit eighteenth-century views of rational judgment, discipline, and order.1 But the prominence of the staid eighteenth-century couplet has obscured an earlier, more risqué reputation of the form. Prior to 1600, iambic pentameter couplets were disdained by sophisticated English poets, who associated the rhyme scheme with loose verse and libertine thought. Though in the early seventeenth century Ben Jonson and his literary progeny ... Read More

  • A Balsome for Both the Hemispheres: Tears as Medicine in Herbert’s
           Temple and Seventeenth-Century Preaching
    • Abstract: George Herbert, according to the critical consensus, was no weeping penitent. Although repentant tears, sighs, and groans feature prominently in some 20-odd poems in The Temple, Herbert scholars have tended to agree that the poetic speaker who identifies himself to God as “thy clay that weeps, thy dust that calls” only uses tears ironically or metaphorically, in direct contrast to the self-indulgent lachrymose excesses of his Counter-Reformation contemporaries.1 Stating what has become the dominant appraisal of tears in The Temple, Richard Strier asserted some 20 years ago that Herbert’s “Marie Magdalene” displays a “skeptical attitude toward super-abundant weeping” that “would be, to say the least, odd in a ... • Milton’s Political Ontology of the Human
    • Abstract: “Astonied stood and Blank”: here is a Medusa moment in Paradise Lost—the point at which Adam takes in Eve’s trespass—where Adam seems to turn to stone.1 “Astonied,” Adam is, quite literally, struck like a thunderbolt (Latin: attonare). The literary tropology of petrification, turning mute with horror, is familiar (Job, Aeneas); but transformation to stone has other resonances: the sign of male hysteria, for instance; the primal moment in the construction—and deconstruction—of Romantic subjectivity.2 The literal recalcitrance of the heart of stone is familiar from the Bible and in Reformed Christian literary writing: “I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezek. ... • Romantic Stone Speech and the Appeal of the Inorganic
    • Abstract: If Alice Oswald’s poem animates stone by giving it a curiously vulnerable voice, her experiment is inverted in a well-known image from Ludwig Wittgenstein’s On Certainty, where a propositional voice turns into a markedly vulnerable kind of stone: It might be imagined that some propositions, of the form of empirical propositions, were hardened and functioned as channels for such empirical propositions as were not hardened but fluid; and that this relation altered with time, in that fluid propositions hardened, and hard ones became fluid. . . . The mythology may change back into a state of flux, the river-bed of thoughts may shift. . . . And the bank of that river consists partly of hard rock, subject to ... Read More

  • Will plus Words plus Worth: What’s in a Name'
    • Abstract: Housed in the book of the autobiographical poem that William Wordsworth reflexively titled Books is a dream about books.1 Within this appears a word-chain even more self-reflexive than has been noticed in the rich archive of critical attention to this episode. In the Prelude, Book Fifth: Books opens in crisis about the material survival of “things worthy of unconquerable life,” including the book of poetry at hand (1805, 5.19). Is there an under-pressure of Wordsworth in worthy' I wouldn’t pause over this one syllable but for noting how two syllables of Wordsworth possess a crucial line in the dream to come. Even though Wordsworth revised this initial “worthy of” to “that aspire to” in the 1850 Prelude, the ... Read More

  • De Quincey, Dictionaries, and Casuistry
    • Abstract: “There is nothing old under the sun.” In what follows, I explore Thomas De Quincey’s fascination with lexicography, glancing at several of his essays on dictionaries and on such linguistic matters as standards of pronunciation and the extemporaneous quality of conversation. All of these essays circle around the question of current usage and its sovereignty in determining what is right and wrong in speech and writing, but also around the fact that norms of usage change over the decades in ways that are mostly imperceptible to speakers of a language. De Quincey, in addition to being obsessed by perishability and ruin—by the way that the things and actions of men date themselves—was also a champion of the ... Read More

  • “Fumbling Along the Boundaries of the Personal”: History and Affect in
           Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September
    • Abstract: Most readers of Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September will have been struck by its startlingly abrupt ending. Telling the story of an Anglo-Irish Big House during the Irish Rebellion, The Last September presents us with two parallel plotlines that, in important ways, never intersect. The first is the affectively rich story of the potential marriage of Lois Farquar—an orphan who lives at Danielstown with her aunt and uncle, Lord and Lady Naylor—to a British soldier named Gerald Lesworth, who is in Ireland to defend Lois and her family from the novel’s second plot: the Irish Rebellion, which remains largely in the background until we reach the text’s conclusion. The marriage plot has been disposed of, the ... Read More

  • The Scandal of a Black Ulysses: Wallace Thurman, Richard Bruce Nugent, and
           the Harlem Reception of Joyce
    • Abstract: Wallace Thurman’s 1932 novel Infants of the Spring is a Harlem Renaissance roman-à-clef focalized through Raymond Taylor, Thurman’s figure for himself. At the center of the novel, a disconsolate Ray agonizes over what he sees as his failure to produce a work that could justify what Langston Hughes famously named the national “vogue” for Negro art: The struggle to free himself from race consciousness had been hailed before actually accomplished. The effort to formulate a new attitude toward life had become a seeking for a red badge of courage. That which might have emerged normally, if given time, had been forcibly and prematurely exposed to the light. It now seemed as if the Caesarian operation was ... Read More

  • The Formalist Genesis of “Postcolonial” Reading: Brathwaite, Bhabha,
and A House for Mr Biswas
    • Abstract: The novel was an imported form. For the metropolitan writer it was only one aspect of self-knowledge. About it was a mass of other learning, other imaginative forms, other disciplines. For me, in the beginning, it was my all. “Form,” we are told, is an abstraction, a “mischievous” concept.2 Formalism—the practice of reading and critical discourse that “form” spawns—registers as much a “desire for form” as an identification or analysis thereof.3 It says as much about the investments (or fetishes) of the reader as about the text in which she locates formal work, or beauty, or accomplishment. To the literary historian, “form” becomes operative at moments when the discourse of formalism feeds into the ... Read More
