  • George Hickes and the Invention of the Old English Maxims Poem
    • Abstract: The Old English Maxims poems, like other aphoristic literatures from around the world, distill "universals in their most pithy and economical form," specifically as a string of proverbs designed to transmit customary wisdom and to shape social behavior.1 In the words of R. D. Fulk and Christopher Cain, these medieval Maxims constitute "a series of didactic generalizations that may be understood either literally (e.g., 'a blind person must do with his eyes') or metaphorically (e.g., 'a fallen tree grows least')."2 It is perhaps unsurprising, then, that they have chiefly remained the province of folklorists and cultural historians who accept them as ethnographic records of daily life and society. Literary critics ... Read More

  • Shakespeare's Histories of Forgiveness
    • Abstract: Among William Shakespeare's comedies there are comedies of forgiveness.1 In his romances one meets characters who forgive each other by talking things out even after the most vicious, most unforgiveable things have been done.2 Some of Shakespeare's tragedies are about forgiveness in the sense that their characters find themselves betrayed by the words and gestures that might facilitate such talking-out.3 And one of the tragedies is specifically about generosity and its discontents. Timon of Athens is "a great blow to cherished Elizabethan conceptions" of natural human generosity, writes John M. Wallace, "but it concludes, for want of anything better, by leaving them still in place."4 Giving and forgiving cannot be ... Read More

  • Sleep and the Shepherd-King in Quevedo and Shakespeare: An Essay in
           Comparative Semiospherics
    • Abstract: This essay is the outcome of a paper written for a conference commemorating the joint quatercentenaries of the deaths in 1616 of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes.1 The conference called for papers offering a comparative approach to the two writers. Casting about for a suitable subject, my attention was drawn to a lengthy treatise on kingship, Política de Dios, by a contemporary of Cervantes's, Francisco de Quevedo, one chapter of which addresses the issue of how much sleep is perquisite of a monarch. Beyond the subject of the chapter, some of its language reminded me of the famous speeches on sleep delivered by Shakespeare's Kings Henry IV and Henry V, in which a longing for slumber is expressed that ... • Science and Poetry in 1790s Somerset: The Self-Experiment Narrative, the
Aeriform Effusion, and the Greater Romantic Lyric
    • Abstract: The first volume of these Poems … was published, as an experiment, which, I hoped, might be of some use to ascertain, how far, by fitting to metrical arrangement a selection of the real language of men in a state of vivid sensation, that sort of pleasure and that quantity of pleasure may be imparted, which a Poet may rationally endeavour to impart. The remotest discoveries of the Chemist, the Botanist, or Mineralogist, will be as proper objects of the Poet's art as any upon which it can be employed, if the time should ever come when these things shall be familiar to us, and the relations under which they are contemplated by the followers of these respective sciences shall be manifestly and palpably material to us as ... • Herman Melville's Love Letters
    • Abstract: The 5th of August, 1850, is the fateful date on which scholars have determined that Herman Melville met Nathaniel Hawthorne at a picnic in the Berkshires, though for any number of reasons neither man recorded the date.1 Melville and Hawthorne visited as neighbors for the next 16 months, through November of 1851, and then saw one another only twice more: once a year later, in December of 1852, when Hawthorne was living in Concord, and then five years later, in November of 1856, when Melville visited Liverpool where Hawthorne was working as a consulate. They were, in a word, fast friends. And while both men had other important friendships with other literary men of the day, it is their brief friendship with one ... Read More

  • Dickinson and the Politics of Plant Sensibility
    • Abstract: Even at the end of her life, Emily Dickinson never withdrew from her flowers. Throughout her isolation at her parents' house on Main Street in Amherst, Dickinson continued to garden, arrange bouquets, and send cuttings to distant friends. As a student she had scouted for new flowers to press into her bound herbarium, and in winter, to keep plants warm, she brought them into the conservatory built against the southeastern wall of the house. The structure allowed her to cultivate tropical plants that could not otherwise survive the New England climate. Dickinson knew firsthand how fickle plants could be, and how fragile, and she had skill in growing plants that were not native to the area or suited to the climate. ... Read More

  • Anthony Trollope and the Risorgimento
    • Abstract: The publication of Edward Said's Orientalism in 1978 significantly altered the ways in which literary critics conceived of Victorian cosmopolitanism: challenging the notion that "the nineteenth-century Orientalist was either a scholar … or a gifted enthusiast," Said suggested that world citizenship was the ideological mask with which European, bourgeois man sought to appropriate the world and to fashion it in his image.1 Since the turn of the century, however, scholars have shown that the Victorian cosmopolite was in fact a considerably more complex figure. Amanda Anderson and David Wayne Thomas have highlighted how the Victorians cultivated ethical dispositions, including detachment from one's primary cultural ... Read More

  • "Mr. Kayerts. He is Dead": Literary Realism and Conrad's "Outpost of
           Progress"
    • Abstract: In his unfinished final book, Raymond Williams calls modernism a "selective tradition."1 The problem doesn't lie in selection itself. All traditions select. But when "a highly selected version of the modern … offers to appropriate the whole of modernity," it reduces premodernist literature to a naive vision of natural language, transparent representation, fixed forms, and authoritative, nonreflexive authors, while neglecting the continuing and formally innovative practice of realist writing.2 In a global corollary, Neil Lazarus argues that the selective tradition of postcolonial modernism creates an emaciated canon:I am tempted to overstate the case … and declare that there is in a strict sense only one author in ... • The Science Fiction of Roe v. Wade
    • Abstract: Pro-life advocates often insist that the unborn fetus resembles nothing so much as a slave. To President Ronald Reagan, that resemblance was abundantly clear. In his 1983 essay "Abortion and the Conscience of the Nation," Reagan wrote that "we cannot survive as a free nation when some men decide that others are not fit to live and should be abandoned to abortion or infanticide."1 He was, he explained, channeling Abraham Lincoln, who had said that the nation could not endure "half slave and half free."2 As recently as 2015, the Republican presidential candidate and neurosurgeon Ben Carson compared women who have abortions to "slave owners," and as early as 1972, the authors of the pro-life publication Abortion and ... • Staging the Polis
    • Abstract: The democratic [person] is a being who speaks, which is also to say a poetic being, a being capable of embracing a distance between words and things which is not deception, not trickery, but humanity. … A poetic virtue, then, and a virtue grounded in trust. In August 1991, violence erupted in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, after a car in the motorcade of Lubavitch Grand Rebbe Menachem Schneerson struck and killed Gavin Cato, the seven-year-old son of Guyanese immigrants. Eight months later, in South Central Los Angeles, rioting was the immediate response to a suburban jury's acquittal of four white police officers who brutally beat Rodney King, an African-American motorist; much of the violence targeted Korean-owned ...
