  • Editor’s Overview
    • Abstract: Our first issue of 2020 offers two unique perspectives on the common citizen soldiers and how they shaped the Civil War, at the same time as it shaped their very identities. Mark A. Smith explores the transmission of military engineering expertise within the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War’s first year. He asserts that a specialized unit known as the engineer company carefully maintained these skills before the war and that during the conflict, the men of this company spread their particular knowledge to recruits in new regular army organizations and to new volunteer engineering units during a training period in the winter of 1861–62. From there, all of the army’s engineer soldiers, both regular and ... Read More

  • In Memoriam: James I. “Bud” Robertson Jr., 1930–2019
    • Abstract: James I. “Bud” Robertson Jr. died on November 2, 2019, aged 89, in Richmond, Virginia. In a career that spanned six decades, Robertson shaped the field of Civil War history through his teaching, his scholarship, his central role in both the centennial and the sesquicentennial commemorations of the Civil War, his editorship of this journal, and his extraordinary work educating public audiences.A native of Danville, Virginia, Robertson was educated at Randolph Macon College and Emory University, where his PhD research was supervised by renowned Civil War historian Bell Irvin Wiley. Following his PhD he taught at the University of Iowa from 1959 to 1961, during which time he also served as editor of Civil War History ... Read More

  • A Crucial Leavening of Expertise: Engineer Soldiers and the Transmission
of Military Proficiency in the American Civil War
    • Abstract: Current scholarship on Union military engineering in the Civil War legitimately emphasizes its improvisational nature. In Northern armies of both theaters, volunteer soldiers with experience in mechanical or skilled trades improvised solutions to engineering problems. They built roads, bridges, and field works as needed to support military operations. Historian Thomas F. Army Jr. has even argued that the ability of Northern armies to concoct these solutions on the fly was a key reason for ultimate Union victory and a reflection of the North’s particular industrial and educational culture. There is, however, an important qualification to the improvisational nature of Union engineering that nearly all historians of ... Read More

  • “Victory’s Long Review”: The Grand Review of Union Armies and the
           Meaning of the Civil War
    • Abstract: As the last soldiers of the grand armies of the republic marched out of the nation’s capital at the conclusion of the Grand Review, history took possession of the momentous struggle for Union and freedom that the previous four years had represented. The two days of victory celebration, on May 23 and 24, 1865, were designed to project a definitive statement of what the Civil War had achieved. The parade also set the stage for mid-nineteenth-century Americans to begin to make meaning of the war, a process that consumes the nation to the present day. As the Civil War became the province of historians, so had other great wars, not least those of antiquity. The victory celebration that signaled the end of the Civil War ... Read More

  • Unrequited Toil: A History of United States Slavery by Calvin Schermerhorn
           (review)
    • Abstract: In this volume in the Cambridge Essential Histories series for undergraduate students, Calvin Schermerhorn examines the history of slavery in the United States, using words from William Wells Brown, a famous fugitive slave, as his title. Brown’s words provide an appropriate frame for what follows, including the slow death of slavery in the North, the expansion of the Cotton Empire during the antebellum era, and everyday slave life, in a chapter titled “Life in the Quotidian.” Schermerhorn also examines sexual violence, the slave narratives, geopolitics, the coming of the Civil War, the war itself, and Reconstruction. Perhaps the best component of his study of this large topic concerns his economic analysis ... Read More

  • Fugitive Slaves and Spaces of Freedom in North America ed. by David Alan
           Pargas (review)
    • Abstract: Seminal works such as John Hope Franklin and Loren Schweninger’s Runaway Slaves: Rebels on the Plantation (1999) have defined the Underground Railroad along a South–North axis as slaves pursued freedom in the North or in British Canada. Fugitive Slaves and Spaces of Freedom in North America sophisticates our understanding of the geography of freedom in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. With the push for the expansion of slavery especially after the Age of Revolutions, slaves pushed back, as Pargas puts it in his introduction, by “fleeing in every possible direction” (11). And as the eleven contributors to the volume show, the North and Canada were not the only places of freedom for runaway slaves.Even when ... Read More

    • Abstract: In this brisk, powerful book, Kellie Carter Jackson shows why black abolitionists embraced violence and why it matters for historians’ understanding of the Civil War. “Black abolitionists did not cause the war,” she writes in a concluding chapter, “but they predicted it and prepared for it,” going farther and faster toward emancipation by force than white abolitionists did (156). Like other recent scholarship on abolitionism, including Manisha Sinha’s The Slave Cause (2016), Jackson places black abolitionists at the center of the movement. Yet, this centering comes with an added critique of past scholarship that focused on white abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison. That focus, she argues, has in the past led ... Read More

  • Armies of Deliverance: A New History of the Civil War by Elizabeth R.
           Varon (review)
    • Abstract: In this provocative and engaging history of the Civil War, Elizabeth Varon reassesses one of the conflict’s central questions. How did the North define its war aims in a fashion that unified and sustained a pro-war coalition of Republicans and Democrats capable of crushing secession' On entering office, Abraham Lincoln faced a contentious political landscape: Radical Republicans wanting to end slavery and promote black citizenship to War Democrats striving to maintain both the Union and the racial status quo. Between these political extremes was a majority of Northerners who, like the president, were determined to preserve the Union and end slavery primarily because of its negative impact on free labor. In ... Read More

  • Embattled Freedom: Journeys through the Civil War’s Slave Refugee Camps
           by Amy Murrell Taylor (review)
    • Abstract: Over the past decade, historians of emancipation have paid increasing attention to how questions of mobility shaped the African American experience during the Civil War. Important scholarship by Chandra Manning, Yael Sternhell, Steven Hahn, Glenn Brasher, and Jim Downs, among others, has provided a fuller picture of how African Americans escaped bondage and began the transition from slavery to freedom in refugee camps. (See Yael A. Sternhell, Routes of War: The World of Movement in the Confederate South [Cambridge, MA: Harvard Univ. Press, 2012]. • The Civil War and the Transformation of American Citizenship ed. by Paul
           Quigley (review)
    • Abstract: Citizenship in the Civil War era remains one of the richest areas of study in the field. As Paul Quigley and the authors in this collection ably demonstrate, work on citizenship remains as vibrant as it is precisely because historians have not approached the topic narrow-mindedly. With admirable disregard for simple questions or a stock collection of characters, the authors make it clear that the history of wartime citizenship was uneven and up for grabs.Though the title of the volume suggests otherwise, the essays in this collection posit that the Civil War did not transform ideas about or practices of citizenship as much as the war altered the course of the republic in a series of overlapping historical ... • The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to the Civil War by
           Joanne B. Freeman (review)
    • Abstract: The notion that physical violence between Northern and Southern congressmen before 1861 augured a shooting Civil War is not new. In This Hallowed Ground (1956), for example, Bruce Catton called the 1856 caning of Republican senator Charles Sumner the Civil War’s initial battle. In this terrific new book, Joanne Freeman agrees that “the first battles of the Civil War were waged in Congress itself ” (11). Yet she extends the list of inflammatory sectional brawls far beyond Sumner’s caning. By her count, between 1830 and 1861 at least seventy incidents of physical conflict—elbowing, spitting, punching, grappling, threatening with knives or guns, and dueling—occurred in, or were precipitated by angry clashes in, the ... • The F Street Mess: How Southern Senators Rewrote the Kansas-Nebraska Act
           by Alice Elizabeth Malavasic (review)
    • Abstract: Many scholars have assessed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. The clear majority of them believe its passage and implementation were prime causal factors that brought on the American Civil War. Most of these works treat two of the primary factors: the law’s significance and historic meaning and the drive to expand slavery among the states. The primary work continues to be James A. Rawley’s Race and Politics: “Bleeding Kansas” and the Coming of the Civil War (1969), and the most recent work, The Nebraska-Kansas Act of 1854 (2008), edited by John R. Wunder and Joann M. Ross, focuses on the long neglected Nebraska aspect.Less attention has been given to the detailed political history required for the law’s passage ... Read More

  • Tariff Wars and the Politics of Jacksonian America by William K. Bolt
           (review)
    • Abstract: Timing is everything. Most Americans today can recite this short but useful adage. In the field of history, timing—or, more precisely, the degree to which a historian’s work addresses a topic germane to current events or fashionable trends in the scholarship at the time of its publication—is certainly not everything. Good timing, in tandem with thorough research and convincing arguments, however, can help to drive the success of a book by increasing its exposure and readership, which makes for happy authors and publishers. William K. Bolt, associate professor of history at Francis Marion University, has impeccable timing. While he could never have predicted the political advent of Donald Trump, the Republican’s ... • Practical Liberators: Union Officers in the Western Theater during the
Civil War by Kristopher A. Teters (review)
    • Abstract: Kristopher Teters’s Practical Liberators: Union Officers in the Western Theater during the Civil War sets out to examine how western theater commanders in the Federal armies “carried out emancipation in the field” through focusing on “the general patterns and characteristics of this policy” (2). Teters’s decision to center his analysis on the western theater and the Lower South states it encompassed is a sensible one; as he points out, the majority of slaves lived in those states, and the Union army interaction with the institution unfolded across a variety of armies with high stakes and significant consequences.Teters repeatedly emphasizes the practicality and pragmatism of his subjects’ emancipation policy. The ... Read More
