  • Archive and the Boundaries of "Institutional Polymorphism"
    • Abstract: Alice Lovejoy's deeply researched and engagingly written book tells the story of the relatively little-known Czechoslovak Army Film studio, from its inception in 1929 to its Soviet normalization in 1969. The book recognizes the studio's peculiar position—a state-funded institution with its internal autonomy—as ideal for training filmmakers to create films whose formal innovation and sociopolitical critique paralleled the Czechoslovak New Wave. Many of the most prominent male filmmakers of the celebrated Czechoslovak New Wave (1962–69), in fact, worked for Czechoslovak Army Film in the 1950s and 1960s. Lovejoy's book offers more than a mere history of a governmental institution on the fringes of culture. It ... Read More

  • Editorial Statement
    • Abstract: Cultural Critique provides a forum for creative and provocative scholarship in the theoretical humanities and humanistic social sciences. Transnational in scope and transdisciplinary in orientation, the journal strives to spark and galvanize intellectual debates as well as to attract and foster critical investigations regarding any aspect of culture as it expresses itself in words, images, and sounds, across both time and space. The journal is especially keen to support scholarship that engages the ways in which cultural production, cultural practices, and cultural forms constitute and manifest the nexus between the aesthetic, the psychic, the economic, the political, and the ethical intended in their widest ... • Porosity and its Discontents: Approaching Naples in Critical Theory
    • Abstract: Naples has long been subject to intense cultural and critical interrogation. Since the flourishing of the Grand Tour in the eighteenth century, artists, travelers, poets, journalists, essayists, and intellectuals have sought to articulate and make sense of their reactions to a city that has often provoked contradictory responses and been experienced as an assault on the senses. The substantial body of cultural production generated by visitors to Naples is complemented by a rich corpus of literary and cultural texts emerging from within the city itself and by the numerous studies of Naples deriving from diverse fields of the social sciences (e.g., politics, anthropology, urban studies, criminology). Of particular ... Read More

  • The Ethical Stakes of Critique
    • Abstract: Sean Meighoo's The End of the West and Other Cautionary Tales opens with the following problematic: the concept of the West drives a certain form of Euro-centrism. However, Meighoo argues that many of the critiques of this very Euro-centrism are themselves complicit with their object of critique. The basis for this argument is that even these critiques presuppose a unitary concept and history of the West. Meighoo diagnoses this failure in a range of figures and texts from continental philosophy and postcolonial theory. While the demonstration of this failure forms a major portion of the book in the form of Parts II and III (136 pages of 222 pages) there is what might appear an unusual framing to these sections. ... • Culture, Eurocentrism, and the Work of Ideology
    • Abstract: In Culture and Eurocentrism, Ismail makes the compelling case that the concept of culture remains attached—as the pithy title of his monograph suggests—to the political and epistemological structure of Eurocentrism. More specifically, he argues that culture furnishes the "most potent signifier of subjectivity" within what he calls the "modern Anglo-U.S. episteme" (2). Breaching the commonsense distinction between the old "universal" model of culture that served to justify European colonial expansion during the nineteenth century on one hand and the new "relativist" model of culture that has been based on the scientific observation and ethical respect for different cultures since the turn of the twentieth century on ...            Brutalised Bodies, Evental Sites, and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious
           Basterds
    • Abstract: Repeating a shot established at the end of its second chapter in which we meet the Basterds, a team of Jewish-American soldiers led by Lieutenant Aldo "The Apache" Raine, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (IB) ends with the director's trademark low-angle medium shot, centering on the smirking faces of Raine and Private Utivich framed by a pale sky and an overhanging canopy. As Ennio Morricone's Rabbia e Tarantella (written for Paolo and Vittorio Taviani's Allonsanf àn) builds over the guttural screams of Colonel Hans Landa, "You know something, Utivich," Raine proclaims, ventriloquizing the film's auteur in its final meta-narrative moment, "I think this just might be my masterpiece." Seconds earlier, using ... Read More

  • Between Post-Structuralism and Science: Who Gets to Define Disciplines and
           Their Boundaries'
    • Abstract: At the current moment—when the alt-right claims that truth is relative and the White House rules with the help of "fake news"—the good old Science Wars seem nearly quaint.1 In a way they are, but they—especially the early exchanges between Jacques Derrida and John Searle, even if they do not normally count as Science Wars—are also at the root of the current discord between post-structuralism and science. In this article, I suggest that a reexamination of the positions and sentiments that accompanied some exchanges between poststructuralists and scientists can shed light on precisely what stands in the way of bringing the two camps closer together. This inquiry into the disagreements is still called for despite the ... Read More

  • The Humanity of the Car: Automobility, Agency, and Autonomy
    • Abstract: A biologist from a pedestrian planet, peering at some stretch of North America from a height of five hundred feet, will conclude that its dominant species is a shiny lozenge-shaped reptilian creature that alternately basks in the sun and sprints at great speed. It is host, he will note, to small endosymbiotic organisms, which at intervals emerge, move about slowly, then re-enter the host. Further observation reveals why the host puts up with these seeming parasites. They are devoted to the care and feeding of the host. They suck energy-rich organic compounds from the bowels of the planet and feed them to the host, something it is unable to do for itself.
