  • From Netflix to Movistar+: How Subscription Video-on-Demand Services Have
           Transformed Spanish TV Production
    • Abstract: Subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services are in a growth phase in Europe. A variety of different platforms are increasing their market penetration while boosting their in-house production to retain subscribers and conform to new European audiovisual regulations. In this essay, we compare the impact of two services—Netflix and its Spanish competitor Movistar+—on Spanish television's local production culture. Spain is a particularly important context to track and analyze because it is becoming a popular production hub for transnational operators. Notably, Netflix opened its first European production hub in Madrid in 2019.Spain's television fiction industry is highly developed. Since liberalization in the 1990s ... Read More

  • Runaway Hollywood: Internalizing Postwar Production and Location Shooting
           by Daniel Steinhart (review)
    • Abstract: Writing in 2006, Giuliana Bruno announced that cinema studies had "joined in the spatial turn that cultural history and theory have taken in recent years."1 The "spatial turn" in film and media studies has been tremendously generative as scholars consider how cinema orients us within the world, how the relationship between film and space has helped redirect our thinking about modernity, and how that relationship materializes memories and imagination, as well as how the filmmaking process transforms the lived world. Despite broad interest in the relationship between space, place, and cinema, including several works that address contemporary location shooting, Hollywood location shooting in the postwar period has ... • Unwatchable ed. by Nicholas Baer et al. (review)
    • Abstract: As a feminist film and media studies scholar who has long worked on violence and spectatorship, and recently completed a book on digital-era true crime, I tend to think there is not too much that can faze me. And yet of course there are always limits. I drew the line recently with the Instagram account @crimescenecleanersinc, which shares crime-scene photos of the aftermaths of violent deaths to more than four hundred thousand followers. I initially decided to follow this private account, which comes with a graphic content warning, for research purposes (and, if I am honest, pure curiosity): I wanted to see how far the true-crime phenomenon might go. Suddenly, alongside pictures of pretty flowers, random ... Read More

  • Cinema and the Wealth of Nations: Media, Capital, and the Liberal World
           System by Lee Grieveson (review)
    • Abstract: In October 2016, months after the Brexit referendum, and weeks away from the election of Donald Trump, the British filmmaker Adam Curtis released his latest historical documentary, prophetically titled HyperNormalisation, a nod to how the once unthinkable can quickly become ordinary. In previous films, Curtis explored such topics as the twinned origins of consumer culture and fascism and the shared reliance of Cold War militarism and antidepressants on idealized models of human welfare. In HyperNormalisation, Curtis continues his habit of making sweeping arguments out of compelling historical facts and figures, utilizing archival interview footage of the techno-optimist John Perry Barlow, the Libyan leader Muammar ... • Double Negative: The Black Image and Popular Culture by Racquel J. Gates
           (review)
    • Abstract: The success of recent films such as the independent feature Moonlight (Barry Jenkins, 2016) as well as TV programs such as Atlanta (FX, 2016–present) and Ava DuVernay's miniseries When They See Us (Netflix, 2019) have all contributed to a flood of criticism in popular outlets celebrating black media representations that are "good," meaning high-quality, reputable, and thus highly valued. However, looking deeper into some of these lauded media objects, one sees the specter of negativity haunting such "positive" images. Take, for instance, cinematographic elements of Moonlight, specifically the use of color correction and blue hues that recall hip-hop music-video director Hype Williams's 1998 urban crime drama Belly ... • Making Radio: Early Radio Production and the Rise of Modern Sound Culture
           by Shawn VanCour (review)
    • Abstract: The emergence of podcasting as a popular form of sound-based narrative has pushed media studies to address the form and content of aural representation. Although there are a wide variety of podcast aesthetics, the popular tend to be linked to either highly produced NPR-like long-form storytelling (e.g.,Serial, 2014–; S-Town, 2017) or the intimate and seemingly unrehearsed qualities of individuals in conversation (e.g., podcast hosts Joe Rogan or Marc Maron). Within a growing and valuable scholarly conversation about contemporary aural representational practices, connections between the present and the past are all too often given short shrift. For example, the appeal of attention-holding narratives (outgrowths of ... Read More

    • Abstract: David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986) is a film that has attracted considerable scholarly attention in the more than three decades since its release, much of which has centered on the film's examination of gender politics, masculinity, and sexual violence. This article seeks to intervene in these conversations by illuminating the role played by sight and sound in the film. Although many scholars have noted the film's revelation of a reformed feminist masculinity that values and cherishes women, rather than seeking to dominate women and possess them as sex objects, no one has yet examined how sight and sound take on gendered dimensions in the film. Specifically, sight is linked in the film to misogyny and the masculine ... Read More

  • Under the Standard: MGM, AT&T, and the Academy's Regulation of
           Power
    • Abstract: Though largely overlooked in film histories, the sound design for Naughty Marietta (W. S. Van Dyke and Robert Z. Leonard, 1935) was once recognized as a major achievement in motion picture acoustics. Critics at its gala premieres commended the filmmakers for how masterfully each song was recorded and how powerful the entire operetta sounded in theaters.1 But such aesthetic feats were not due solely to the decisions of the film's technicians. Oddly enough, Naughty Marietta's acoustical design was deemed impressive thanks to an unconventional exhibition strategy orchestrated by the film's distributor, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).For Naughty Marietta's nationwide release, MGM created not one but two sets of release ... • Capturing Flow: The Growth of the Old-Time-Radio Collecting Culture in the
           United States during the 1970s
    • Abstract: In 1978, the radio collector Chuck Seeley wrote and self-published a fourteen-page guidebook—The Old Time Radio Collector's Handbook—to familiarize newcomers to the hobby with the common practices of the community. This handbook included sections on how to research radio history, what technological equipment was needed to format or duplicate radio recordings, and where local old-time-radio (OTR) clubs could be located around the United States. It was one of many guides or "how-to" essays circulating about OTR collecting in the late 1970s.1 OTR describes programs from the classic network age of American radio, between approximately 1923 and 1962, when radio was the dominant domestic medium. A subculture of OTR fans ... Read More

  • Haunted Television: Trauma and the Specter in the Archive
    • Abstract: Television is full of ghosts. They appear in a wide variety of programming, from serial drama to situation comedy and children's television.1 Television ghosts frequently bring about awareness and acceptance of past trauma, or avoidance of the repetition of the mistakes of the past. This is seen starkly in their use in public service announcements, for example, where ghosts return to speak "beyond the grave" to those who have caused their death, therefore righting injustice or challenging negligence.2 In the 1966 advertisement "Drive Safety," shown in a Gunsmoke (CBS, 1955–1975) ad break, a ghostly cowboy disappears at the side of the road, next to a shattered headlamp, as the voice-over admonishes, "You just can't ... • How John Ford's West Was Framed: Landscape and Geography in the Monument
           Valley Films
    • Abstract: John Ford's oft-cited claim that "the real star of my Westerns has always been the land" was if anything an understatement.1 His films transformed an area in the Navajo Nation on the border of Arizona and Utah known traditionally as Tsé Bii' Ndzisgaii ("Stretches of Treeless Areas" or "Clearings among the Rocks") into a major tourist destination for outsiders, Monument Valley Tribal Park. Despite appearing in relatively few films in Hollywood's studio era, Monument Valley is now a standard component of the western's iconography, readily exploited in any genre homage, collage, critique, pastiche, parody, or mash-up. Images of its familiar buttes and mesas decorate homes, offices, and computer desktops as memorials ... Read More

  • Artifice, Fantasy, and Exaggeration: The Boundless Limitations of Puppets
    • Abstract: Without a doubt, Jin Xi (1919–1997) is one of the masters of puppet animation in China. Jin Xi's "On the Distinguishing Characteristics of Puppet Films" is among the first explicit theoretical discussions of animation in Chinese. Jin Xi's theory shines a light on puppet animation production in China in the 1950s through a detailed discussion of themes and techniques in an international context, especially contemporary Czech and Russian (Soviet) puppet animation. In her 2011 study of the Quay Brothers, Suzanne Buchan bemoaned the scarcity of theory that focuses on puppet animation. Jin Xi's article adds an important theoretical statement to a growing body of work on international puppet animation.1Puppet animation ... Read More

  • On the Distinguishing Characteristics of Puppet Films
    • Abstract: A new type of film has appeared in the category of cinema arts in recent years—the puppet film.1 Puppet films have gradually emerged in keeping with the needs of the people, in particular the needs of children. Now our nation has also begun producing puppet films.2 Looking at puppet films from the point of view of their formal characteristics, there's no reason to doubt that one day they will grow to become an enjoyable artistic form. But how to employ this form, how to put into play the specific strengths of this form to enable the independent aspects of puppet animation to emerge, deserves our further research and enquiry. In my opinion, it goes without saying that puppet films are like other forms of literary and ... • Imagining Global Video: The Challenge of Netflix
    • Abstract: Netflix has evolved swiftly and significantly over its two-decade history. The service that established itself distributing films on DVD by mail in the United States is now most aptly categorized as a global video service. Yet Netflix's often-claimed "global" status is always a matter of dispute, for film and media scholars as much as for audiences.Because of Netflix's policy of reporting subscriber numbers only in the categories of US or "international" subscribers, it is often difficult to have a sense of how pervasive the service is anywhere other than the United States. Netflix's catalog, cultural status, brand recognition, and market power also vary enormously from country to country. For media scholars, these ... Read More

  • Luis Miguel: La serie, Class-Based Collective Memory, and Streaming
           Television in Mexico
    • Abstract: Netflix's first Spanish-language original series, Club de cuervos (2015–2019), was also its first original series for the Mexican market. Four years later, Netflix original content from Mexico includes multiple seasons of this acclaimed comedy along with insipid reality TV, middlebrow thrillers, and the Oscar-winning film Roma (Alfonso Cuarón, 2018). In February 2019, chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced that Netflix Mexico would produce fifty television shows and films over the following two years, making it the platform's international territory with the most targeted productions.1 Given its standing in the Netflix ecosystem, what does this territory reveal about how a foreign subscription video-on-demand ... • Black Ships' Locating Netflix in Taiwan and Japan
    • Abstract: This article compares the discourses around Netflix's expansion in two East Asian markets, Japan and Taiwan. Specifically, it looks at how the term "black ship" (kurofune in Japanese)—a historical reference to the Perry expedition to Japan in the 1850s—is frequently used as rhetoric by both Japanese and Taiwanese media critics to discuss Netflix's possible impact on their respective domestic markets. It explains how and why, although media critics in both Japan and Taiwan used a common rubric (i.e., black ship) to discuss the introduction of Netflix, the ways Netflix is situated in each country are substantially different. As a video-streaming platform operating simultaneously in more than 190 countries, Netflix ... • Global Portals in National Markets: Branding Netflix in Israel
    • Abstract: Branding has been described as the defining industrial practice of television's recent past.1 As the frames that manage the interactions among viewers, content, and producers, television brands operate at multiple levels. For example, channels with well-defined brand identities are better able to establish strong relationships with loyal viewers; executives, industry observers, and academics see these relationships as central to commercial success in the increasingly competitive television market.2 Beginning in the mid-1980s, demographic network branding—reflected in Lifetime's slogan "Television for Women," for example—became a common industry response to increasingly fragmented audiences.3 In this context ...
