  • "Journeys of Adventure among Its Far-Flung Debris": Three Theories of the
           Blockbuster Explosion Spectacle
    • Abstract: The final entry in a trilogy of X-Men prequels, X-Men: Apocalypse (Bryan Singer, 2016) culminates in a breathtaking explosion sequence that, unlike the rest of the commercially successful but critically panned superhero action blockbuster, impressed both critics and fans alike.1 Centering on the School for Gifted Mutants that doubles as the X-Men's sprawling base of operations, the sequence opens relatively conventionally, with a fireball tearing through the building's foundations. Yet with the arrival of Quicksilver (Evan Peters), a mutant blessed with the capacity to think and move at supersonic speeds, the visual drama of the sequence intensifies. As the camera assumes Quicksilver's point of view, and thus gains ... Read More

  • The Pixelated Afterlife of Nicolás Guillén Landrián:
           Migratory Forms
    • Abstract: The Cuban filmmaker Nicolás Guillén Landrián's final and sole audiovisual work produced in exile, Inside Downtown (2001), lives on YouTube distressed and marked by encoding artifacts. In collaboration with Jorge Egusquiza Zorilla, Inside Downtown is one of fifteen surviving films directed by Guillén Landrián (1938–2003), many of which have been transferred to digital formats and later smuggled across the Florida Straits, eventually making their way to YouTube. The first fourteen were produced within the context of the Cuban Film Institute (Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos, or ICAIC) from 1962 to 1972 and then languished in the Cinemateca de Cuba's film archive on 35mm celluloid film until ... • (In)visibilities: Iñárritu's Cinema and the Melodramatic Regime
    • Abstract: Le mélodrame commence … quand la fiction vient se nouer à cette fiction "réelle" qui s'appelle société. [Melodrama begins … when fiction intertwines with the "real" fiction called society].The cinema's overwhelming desire to see, to analyze, its hunger for reality, is an act of concrete homage towards other people, towards what is happening and existing in the world. Not long ago, in a lecture on the scholarship on melodrama, Linda Williams compared it to a millenarian tale about a group of blind men who touch an elephant to learn what it is like. Each one feels a different part, but only one part. They then compare their impressions only to realize they are in complete disagreement. Williams recounted the fable as ... Read More

  • El Grito de Sunset Park: Cop Watching, Community Organizing, and Video
           Activism
    • Abstract: Within the past few years an interminable stream of images of young, working-class, black men being killed by the police have flooded commercial and social media. Oscar Grant. Trayvon Martin. Mike Brown. Laquan McDonald. Eric Garner. Freddie Gray. Samuel DuBose. Philando Castile. Alton Sterling.1 A cycle of brutal video dominates commercial news coverage in which black bodies are sacrificed a second time over the airwaves in the search for ratings and outrage. Surveillance and spectacle suddenly converge, a logical outgrowth of a postindustrial capitalist society, as Susan Sontag once mused in her 1977 book On Photography.2Yet at a more local level many working-class communities of color are integrating digital ... • Sonic Elongation: Creative Audition in Documentary Film
    • Abstract: Imaginative sound design that stretches into musical texture can press at the fragile border between the fantasies of fiction film and documentary's fraught engagement with real-world footage. In fiction film, the creative blurring of sound and music can unsettle our reading of an image; it can engender complicated and contradictory forms of engagement able to lead us deep into the heart of a story. But when audio elements collide in documentary film, the fantastical rendering of the world portrayed can undermine many of the already-problematic linchpins of the genre: truth, objectivity, authenticity, and clarity. • Other Ends of Cinema: Powers of Ten, Exponential Data, and the Archive of
           Scientific Images
    • Abstract: Among his notes for the 1971 IBM exhibition A Computer Perspective, the designer Charles Eames wrote under the heading "Possible New Directions" a buried insight: "the need for imagery created by the pressure of data."1 Census figures, medical records, corporate bookkeeping, and all manner of other forms of accounting and measurement had grown so prodigiously, as Eames saw it, that the sheer mass of information resisted human understanding, requiring the unity of the image for comprehension. Recognizing imaging in this way as part of the history of computing was prescient at a time when the graphical user interface tarried in its experimental infancy. Notwithstanding a handful of special-purpose design workstations ... Read More

  • IN FOCUS: Modes of Black Liquidity: Music Video as Black Art
    • Abstract: Midway through Kahlil Joseph's short film Music Is My Mistress (2017), the cellist and singer Kelsey Lu turns to Ishmael Butler, a rapper and member of the hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces, to ask a question. The dialogue is inaudible, but an intertitle appears on screen: "her: Who is your favorite film-maker'" "him: Miles Davis." This moment of Black audiovisual appreciation anticipates a conversation between Black popular culture scholars Uri McMillan and Mark Anthony Neal that inspires the subtitle for this In Focus dossier: "Music Video as Black Art."1 McMillan and Neal interpret the complexity of contemporary Black music video production as a "return" to its status as "art"—and specifically as Black art—that ... • Secret Histories and Visual Riffs, or, Miles Davis, Alice Coltrane, and
Flying Lotus Go to the Movies
    • Abstract: In a 2017 "Tate Talk," Arthur Jafa contended that Kahlil Joseph makes music videos that employ "music as a structure for a visual pattern."1 Jafa went on to argue that these musically founded visual patterns reveal "continuities [or] secret histories" at work in Black music and Black visual culture. Jafa's insights are teeming with acute implications for the study of Black music video and Black film, and thus I want to trace the operations of these "visual riffs on [the] music" through a brief series of notable works while suggesting that such a method is more widely applicable. For now, I focus on the relationships between music and image in William Greaves's groundbreaking Symbiopsychotaxiplasm (1968), with music ... Read More

  • The Persistence of "Wild Style": Hip-Hop and Music Video Culture at the
           Intersection of Performance and Provocation
    • Abstract: Hip-hop, an enduring historiographical enigma, invites reflection on what is past and what is prologue, particularly in relationship to race and the visual archive of performance.1 I discuss the groundbreaking video for the South Bronx's Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five's (GMFFF) iconic song "The Message" (Alvin Hartley, 1982), then pivot to the twenty-first-century artist Donald Glover, and his musical alter-ego Childish Gambino, whose video "This Is America" (Hiro Murai, 2018) engages the archive of racialized movement and dance from the nineteenth century and became a viral phenomenon. Last, I consider how SoundCloud music streaming enabled the rise of new iterations of hip-hop music and video form ... Read More

  • The Music Film as Essay: Montage as Argument in Khalil Joseph's Fly Paper
           and Process
    • Abstract: In conversation with the music-video form, the Black essay film advances processes of remembrance that leverage the possibilities of digital streaming but work against its instrumental logic through the double haptics of audio and vision. This essay shows this refusal and leveraging at work in Kahlil Joseph's twenty-three-minute installation Fly Paper (2018) and the visual album he directed for Sampha Sisay's 2017 album Process. The historical essay film, for all its critical value, also has a special character: it may tend toward a specific kind of engagement, projecting a generatively problematic nowness where demands made on receivers' attention and memory entwine with questions of historical memory and media ... • Intergenerational Pedagogy in Jenn Nkiru's Rebirth is Necessary
    • Abstract: We need to see ourselves to know we exist. The British Nigerian filmmaker Jenn Nkiru has quickly become an important and critically acclaimed practitioner of contemporary Black cinema whose focus on rendering rarely seen aspects of Black life—particularly queer identity and Black feminist thought—is an expression of a younger generation of Black artists' conception of identity, style, and history.2 Nkiru experienced a meteoric rise to popular prominence as the second unit director for the Carters' "apeshit" music video (Ricky Saiz, 2018).3 Creating a viral phenomenon, the "apeshit" video was released on YouTube at the same time as the single, the first from Beyoncé and Jay-Z's first joint album, everything is love ... • Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism by Nancy Wang Yuen (review)
    • Abstract: The dearth of opportunities for actors of color in Hollywood can be attributed to various reasons. As the sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen elucidates in her recent book, Reel Inequality: Hollywood Actors and Racism, these reasons are interlinked but not inevitable. Using interviews she conducted with one hundred individuals working in film and television, including actors of color (and, for comparison, white actors), talent agents, casting directors, and writers, Yuen demonstrates that limited script opportunities, lack of cooperation by intermediaries such as agents and casting directors, and deeply entrenched racist biases undermine efforts to diversify the US film industry.1 Critical race and cultural theory inform ... • Playing with Feelings: Video Games and Affect by Aubrey Anable (review)
    • Abstract: "Start in the middle"—that is how three characters in the cerebral video game Kentucky Route Zero (Cardboard Computer, 2013) decide to begin listening for clues in a strange audio recording they find. It is also a phrase that resonates with Aubrey Anable's approach to video game studies in Playing with Feelings: Video Games and Affect, which looks for a middle ground between computational and representational analysis. For years the field has been mired in a kind of multiplayer battle royal between two factions, one that sees representation (and with it, identity) as incidental to this essentially computational medium and one that believes representation plays as important a role as code and hardware in creating ... • Media U: How the Need to Win Audiences Has Shaped Higher Education by Mark
Garrett Cooper and John Marx (review)
    • Abstract: As I write, my colleagues and I—faculty in an English department at a large, land-grant public research university—look anxiously toward next year's undergraduate enrollments. As is true elsewhere, we have seen sharp declines in the number of English majors since 2008, even as our recently launched film studies BA, housed in English, has grown. At administrative meetings, we study often-conflicting data about English's shrinking market share and scan data visualizations from the Office of Planning and Budgets that track migrations of majors and minors across departments and colleges. We strategize with our college's marketing team about a sexier website with better smartphone compatibility and plot a more flexible ... Read More

Weaponized Gaze by Roger Stahl (review)
    • Abstract: On August 13, 2018, in Fort Drum, New York, US President Donald J. Trump signed H.R. 5515, otherwise known as the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2019. Named in honor of US Senate Committee on Armed Services chair John McCain, the legislation not only funded the national defense for fiscal year 2019 but also boosted military pay by 2.6 percent, the "largest [hike] in nine years," Trump reported.1 Not surprisingly, Trump bragged that his signing of the bill would "increase the size and strength of our [the US] military … replace aging tanks, aging planes and ships with the most advanced and lethal technology ever developed."2 Budget increases for the Department of Defense ... • More Than Meets the Eye: Special Effects and the Fantastic Transmedia
           Franchise by Bob Rehak (review)
    • Abstract: In More Than Meets the Eye, Bob Rehak argues for a transmedial approach to special effects. In a discussion of special effects created for TV and cinema, Rehak opens up avenues for thinking about special effects and their place beyond the images that might thrill us on the screen. The key intervention of More Than Meets the Eye is its articulation of an engagement with special effects situated within a interplay of influences, where industry practices and effects-making technology are sited in the context of a negotiated dialogue with fan culture.Structured around four main chapters, plus introduction and conclusion, Rehak's primary case studies are Star Trek (CBS, 1966–1969), Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977), Final ...
