  • European Empires in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean World in the First half
of the Eighteenth Century: An Introduction
    • Abstract: In 1743, José del Campillo, appointed secretary of the Spanish navy and the Indies in 1736, compared the mighty Spanish Empire to the rapidly developing French and British empires in the Atlantic World. Spain came off badly by comparison with its western European rivals. Indeed, Campillo argued, “a new method of government” was necessary for Spanish America so that “such a rich possession should give us advantages.” He noted that the small islands of Barbados and Martinique were more beneficial to Britain and France than all of Spain’s great empires. “Our system of government,” he lamented, “is totally vitiated.” Spain had neglected economics in favour of “political government” and its preference for power had led ... • “A Pack Of Knaves”: The Royal African Company, the development of the
Jamaican plantation economy and the benefits of monopoly, 1672‒1708
    • Abstract: The Royal African Company had few defenders during its near half century existence as England’s state-sponsored near-monopoly in trade with and from Africa between its incorporation in 1660 and recharter in 1663 and 1672 and its virtual ending in 1708.1 It has even fewer defenders now. It is hard to defend a monopoly, especially one that had as its raison d’etre the harvesting of souls in one of the great crimes in human history, the Atlantic slave trade. The Royal African Company was headed by the Duke of York, who from 1685 became James VII and II, thus being the only major English economic institution directly controlled by someone who became a monarch. It was supported by leading interests in the Court and in ... Read More

  • Early Eighteenth-Century British India: Antimeridian or antemeridiem'
    • Abstract: In 1989, Chris Bayly published a relatively short book that would prove to be as much an historiographical break-point as the historical Imperial Meridian it described.1 In it, he offered a profound model for understanding the British Empire as part of and as a function of world history, as well as a new periodization and conceptualization of the birth of the so-called “second British empire.” Bayly, alongside others like Peter Marshall, set the stage for a fundamental transformation in how British historians have since approached the birth of the modern British state, nation and empire in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in their transoceanic and global contexts.2 Three decades later, it is now ... • Procedures, Jurisdictions and Records: Building the French Empire in the
           early eighteenth century
    • Abstract: The early eighteenth-century French Empire was a web of intertwined rights of jurisdiction on people, places and activities, rather than an entity that exercised homogeneous sovereignty over every overseas territory.1 The so-called “first French colonial empire” was established through the devolution of governance to trade companies in the early seventeenth century, followed by a central Navy administration, the Secrétariat d’Etat de la Marine, from the 1660s onwards. So far, scholars have mostly focused their attention on one single colony or region. This fragmental historiography reflects the many challenges faced by all European powers in imposing their rule: distance and time, as well as geographic, demographic ... Read More

  • As though She “Was a Virtuous Woman”: Colonial changes to gender
roles, marital practices and family formation in Atlantic Jamaica,
           c.1720‒c.1760
    • Abstract: Upon a preliminary reading, Sarah Robinson appears in the Kingston parish register as an ordinary, if not exemplary, eighteenth-century mother and wife. After the baptism of her first son in 1722, Robinson quickly produced a brood of children. Her second son was born in 1724, and a third son in the following year. Given the spacing of the baptisms, the mother would have been continually pregnant during a five-year period.1 While Robinson’s fecundity and her ability to deliver male heirs offered evidence of her valuable reproductive capacity, a more careful inspection of the parish register reveals her departure from the gender role that she initially seems to fulfill. Robinson was not a respectably married woman. ... Read More

  • Globalizing Race: Antisemitism and empire in French and European culture
           by Dorian Bell (review)
    • Abstract: Dorian Bell’s Globalizing Race: Antisemitism and empire in French and European culture has all the ingredients of an important book: an intricate yet fresh conceptual framework—drawing both on extensive primary research and a vast range of theoretical approaches to antisemitism, racism and imperialism—, premises that bring to the fore a past that appears particularly salient in today’s Europe, and a compelling narrative delivered in elegant prose that renders the book a very engaging read. The book further accomplishes that rare feat of historical scholarship: despite a narrow focus on a limited corpus of French literature, newspapers and antisemitic pamphlets dating from the last decades of the nineteenth century ... • Abstract: In Decolonizing the Caribbean Record: An archives reader, editors Jeannette A. Bastian, John A. Aarons and Stanley H. Griffin have assembled authors versed in archival practice and theory to unsettle normative views held concerning archives by considering the range of sources available in the region for a wide audience including archivists, researchers and students. This includes sources often seen as marginal to the written record—which is dominated by colonial and government collections—such as oral testimony, sound recordings and creative design. This important project connects to wider current efforts to decolonise both “the mind” and physical spaces within formerly colonised societies to further the goal of ... Read More

  • Unearthing the Past to Forge the Future: Colin Mackenzie, the early
colonial state and the comprehensive survey of India by Tobias Wolffhardt
           (review)
    • Abstract: The expansive collections, writings, and images that Colin Mackenzie (1754—1821) produced during his four-decade imperial career present historians of early colonial India with opportunities and challenges. Many recent scholars use Mackenzie’s sprawling archive as a privileged vantage point from which to take in the expansion of British rule in southern India, yet the Scotsman eludes easy categorisation. According to Bernard Cohn and Nicholas Dirks, Mackenzie’s sympathetic approach to the people and places of Madras’s hinterlands rendered his work relatively useless for administrative purposes.1 For Peter Robb and Phillip Wagoner, by contrast, Mackenzie adapted local structures to instantiate influential modes of ... • A Global History of Convicts and Penal Colonies ed. by Clare Anderson
           (review)
    • Abstract: This edited collection lives up to the promise, delivering a truly global history of convicts and penal colonies. It is, as Clare Anderson states in her introduction, “the first global overview of convict transportation and penal colonies” covering a “range of contexts” over “more than five centuries” (3). The volume’s title indicates its twofold focus: on convicts, as individuals forcibly mobilised across the globe, and on penal colonies, as spatial assemblages where convicts were marginalised, punished and co-opted by the state and trading companies. Through a globally comparative framework, Anderson et al. persuasively demonstrate that convicts played a key role in the expansion of empires, modernisation of ... Read More

  • Imperial Emotions: The politics of empathy across the British Empire by
           Jane Lydon (review)
    • Abstract: There are two red herrings in the title of this book that must be addressed. First, this is not a book about “empathy”; second, it is not a book that goes “across the British Empire” in its coverage. This is a book about situated and historically specific forms of fellow-feeling in the context of colonial Australia and New Zealand up to the end of the nineteenth century, with a chapter on twentieth-century Australian republicanism at the end. It might be objected that I am nitpicking, but the clarification on these points does not diminish the work’s importance. Indeed, disentangling the specific subject from the generalism of the book’s purported analytical framework helps to make sense of it and to situate its ... Read More

  • The Sound of Silence: Indigenous perspectives on the historical
archaeology of colonialism ed. by Tiina Äikäs and Anna-Kaisa Salmi
           (review)
    • Abstract: “How can archaeology engage with colonial histories, which are still painful and traumatic, in fruitful and ethically sustainable ways' How can archaeologists relate to Indigenous communities who are affected by these histories' What new perspectives can archaeology bring forth, and how can archaeology contribute to current discussions on colonialism past and present'” (182). These three questions, posed by Carl-Gosta Ojala in his Discussion chapter, frame this collection of reflections and case studies by European, Australian and North American scholars. The result is a timely and refreshing exploration of colonialism and Indigenous peoples that complicates, not reiterates, our understanding of the ... Read More

  • The American West and the World: Transnational and comparative
           perspectives by Janne Lahti (review)
    • Abstract: In October 2000 at the Western History Association annual conference, then-president Patricia Limerick spoke on the connections between the American West and global history. Limerick described the deep tradition of finding commonalities in pasts of empire, colonialism and environmentalism. “One can… begin as a western American historian,” she said, “and end up attending closely to global processes, from international patterns of colonialism to planetary implications of climate change. The American West affords the historian a key of admission to some of the best and most thought-provoking conversations going on in the world today.”1This was nothing new for an organization—and a broader network of scholars—who had ... • Mutiny in the Danish Atlantic World: Convicts, sailors, and a dissonant
           empire by Johan Heinsen (review)
    • Abstract: On the evening of 19 January 1683 a group of sailors and convicts huddled up in quiet, urgent conversation on the dark lower deck of the Havmanden, a vessel owned by the Danish West India and Guinea Company, bound for the small island colony of St. Thomas in the Caribbean. For weeks the men had been exchanging stories about the imperious captain of the ship, the Dutchman Jan Blom, and the haughty Jørgan Iversen, once the iron-fisted governor of St. Thomas, now on his way to resume the post. Blom was known for his lavish dinners in the captain’s cabin, which sickened the growling stomachs of those down below. Iversen was denounced as a “soul-seller” who profited off the bodies of the poor. Tensions on the ship had ... Read More
