  • Redefining Semi-Colonialism: A Historiographical Essay on British Colonial
           Presence in China
    • Abstract: The tumultuous relationship between Britain and China in the second half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century has attracted considerable attention and continues to pique scholarly interests. Many existing older studies pertaining to Sino-British relations advanced multi-pronged analysis into the entangled economic, political, and diplomatic relations between the two. However, despite this notable body of scholarship on the various types of Sino-British interaction, China was largely ignored for some decades in the literature on the British colonial history.1 The reasons for China's relative low profile in scholarship on British imperial history stemmed from scholars' understandings of China's minor ... • Sectarianism and Separatism in Colonial Port Phillip
    • Abstract: Europeans first settled the Port Phillip region, which evolved into today's Australian state of Victoria, around 1803. Settler expansion began in earnest c.1834 and the colonial authorities formally annexed and demarcated the region in 1836. As a region of New South Wales, the territory was governed as a crown colony; Charles La Trobe, appointed superintendent of the settlement in 1839, answered to the governor in Sydney. A campaign for Port Phillip's separation from New South Wales began as early as 1840 when a Separation Committee was constituted in Melbourne. Local residents and the municipal authorities in Melbourne, Bourke and Grant dispatched petitions for separation and political autonomy to the governments ... Read More

  • Decolonizing Dialectics by George Ciccariello-Maher (review)
    • Abstract: At heart, George Ciccariello-Maher's Decolonizing Dialectics is a study of political identity. The three thinkers on whom he focuses each confront the conundrum of oppressed groups that fail to recognise their political agency, or are stymied in doing so. Georges Sorel, Frantz Fanon and Enrique Dussel each conduct theoretical analyses and fashion concepts that enable these groups better to recognise themselves and their situations and so constitute themselves as radically oppositional political forces.Ciccariello-Maher begins with Sorel. Writing at the beginning of the twentieth century, Sorel contended that the European working class could not wait for objective conditions to "ripen" to the point at which their ... Read More

  • An Aqueous Territory: Sailor geographies and New Granada's transimperial
Greater Caribbean world by Ernesto Bassi (review)
    • Abstract: Where do regions come from' In this compelling and provocative book, Ernesto Bassi argues that these notoriously fuzzy units of geographical analysis emerge through human mobility. By tracing the paths followed by people in the past, we can uncover our historical subjects' mental maps and gain insight into their geopolitical imaginations. Bassi offers this "lived geography" (8) as an antidote to what he views as static, stable and ahistorical geographic concepts like empires or nation-states. He focuses his study on the Caribbean coast of New Granada (now Colombia), arguing that social interactions wove into existence a region he calls the "transimperial Greater Caribbean" between the 1760s and 1860s. Bassi's ... Read More

  • After Said: Postcolonial literary studies in the twenty-first century ed.
           by Bashir Abu-Manneh (review)
    • Abstract: This volume is a "humanistic critique"1 because it, in its three interrelated constellations, not only discovers the quintessence of Edward Said's multidimensional intellectual and political interventions in the change of literary criticism and political theory for the enrichment of postcolonial studies but also exposes the inherent limitations of his works. The first part proves Said as a distinct postcolonial theorist for his different kinds of humanism, elaborative scope of Orientalism and the exilic effects on his critical thoughts. Bashir Abu-Manneh, editor of the volume, in the introductory chapter, sketches a mirrored reflection of Said's political humanism. He argues that Israel's decisive victory in 1967 ... Read More

  • Nigeria's University Age: Reframing decolonisation and development by Tim
           Livsey (review)
    • Abstract: Established in 1948, the University of Ibadan continues to play a vital role in Nigeria's quest for economic and political development. The history of the university's beginnings and its transnational politics form the thrust of Tim Livesy's book. The eight-chapter book presents the politics, the dynamics and the sociocultural and economic context that gave birth to Nigeria's premier university, and others of Nigeria's second generation universities, i.e. the universities of Ife, Nsukka and Lagos. As argued by the author, from the 1930s the idea of development in Nigeria was envisioned by the British. However, these debates transcended the Nigerian colonial space to include the metropole, as the right frame of ... Read More

  • The Governor's Residence in Tranquebar: The house and the daily life of
its people, 1770–1845 ed. by Esther Fihl (review)
    • Abstract: Between 2004 and 2016, the National Museum of Denmark organized a large scale Tranquebar Initiative project led by the Copenhagen University anthropologist Esther Fihl. This was a collaborative endeavor involving Danish and Indian scholars and heritage specialists, who together reexamined the over two-hundred-year-long history of Danish colonial presence in southern India and its material legacies. One of the focal points of this research and restoration efforts was a house, which in the period 1775–1845 served as the residence of Danish governors. The book summarizes this multifaceted scholarship making the house a prism through which the complex history of Danish engagements in and with India is scrutinized. The ... Read More

  • Vernacular Medicine in Colonial India: Family, market and homoeopathy by
           Shinjini Das (review)
    • Abstract: Scholars studying South Asia's Indigenous medical traditions and their troubled relationship with Western medicine during the colonial period have predominantly focussed on medical practices such as Ayurveda and of late Unani and to some extent Siddha. Homoeopathy has received little attention from the scholars of South Asian medicine, despite the fact that India became the largest consumer of homoeopathic medicine. The reason is obvious that despite being of Western origin, homoeopathy was not a British colonial medical project like Western medicine/English medicine/allopathy/doctory, which had become an integral part of the larger colonial machination of domination. As such, the Indigenous medical traditions were ... Read More

  • Lunatic Asylums in Colonial Bombay: Shackled bodies, unchained minds by
           Sarah Ann Pinto (review)
    • Abstract: For many years, historians and scholars working on colonial India overlooked the history of health and medicine. However, in the past couple of decades, the field has received significant attention. This is reflected in the rising number of works on public health in colonial India. A few major themes dominate the secondary literature on public health and medicine in colonial India—the triangle of disease, health and medicine has been studied from many perspectives. The field of mental health histories has received less attention from scholars working on history of medicine and public health. Sarah Pinto's book is one of the first attempts to study the social history of lunatic asylums in the Bombay Presidency, and ... Read More

  • Consuls, Colonies and the World: Low-level bureaucrats and the machinery
           of empire, c. 1880–1914
    • Abstract: In February 1908, the Dutch consul-general in Singapore wrote the minister of foreign affairs in the Netherlands about a series of attempts by the sultan of Aceh to marshal foreign assistance to defeat the Dutch. Although the sultan had officially surrendered to the Dutch in 1903 after thirty years of nearly continuous war, the conflict in fact roiled on for another decade.1 In Singapore, the consul-general learned that the Sultan had delegated Ghulam Ghouse, an Indian-born man with the sultan's power of attorney, to seek military aid first from the Japanese and then from the British. Ghouse, who was already well-known to the Dutch consul, was unambiguous in his request, beseeching his would-be allies to "come to ... Read More

  • No Exit: Arab existentialism, Jean-Paul Sartre, and decolonization by Yoav
           Di-Capua (review)
    • Abstract: Jean-Paul Sartre is well known to scholars, students and general readers alike, and much has been written and commented on his work over the years. The same can also be said of French intellectuals' role in shaping the discussion of decolonisation—the work of James D. Le Sueur in particular stands out in this aspect.1 Focusing on Sartre but looking beyond the hexagon, Yoav Di-Capua fills an important scholarly gap as he shows the impact that the famous existentialist had on literature and society in independent Arab nations. Providing a thorough overview of the literary establishment mainly in Egypt and Lebanon, Di-Capua traces its transformation throughout the 1950s and 1960s and how it was influenced by ... Read More

  • Business as Usual: White women, welfare, and violence in colonial Kenya,
           1952–60
    • Abstract: In March 1953, the Annual Meeting of the East Africa Women's League (EAWL) was held at Gilgil, north of Nairobi, in the then British colony of Kenya. Reports on the meeting that year commented, as usual, on the diversity and loveliness of the hats and dresses worn by delegates, the quality of the refreshments, the liveliness of the conversation, and on the various notable achievements of the organization in furthering their mission to promote "the welfare of women and children of all races in the Colony."1 This was the first large scale League event held since the declaration of the Mau Mau Emergency in Kenya just a few months earlier. In her report that day the president of the League, Lady Sidney Farrar, painted ... Read More

  • Deporting Indian Political Suspects: Treaty port China's legal connection
           to India, 1914–30
    • Abstract: During the early twentieth century, the British Indian community formed only a small part of the population of China. Nevertheless, they were a conspicuous group in the places opened to foreign residence and trade—the treaty ports. In Shanghai, the biggest treaty port, many British Indian subjects were Sikh men who worked as guards or as policemen. Many constables were recruited for the Shanghai Municipal Police (SMP), a police force for the Shanghai Municipal Council (SMC), which was the foreign-run executive of the International Settlement. These foreign bodies and the police forces represented just one aspect of the multifaceted nature of the semi-colonial status of China during the late nineteenth and early ... Read More
