  • Editors' Preface
    • Abstract: this special anniversary issue represents tapa's contribution to the celebration of the sesquicentenary of the founding of the American Philological Association in 1869. Publishing TAPA has been a major activity of the organization continuously from Volume 1 of 1869–1870 to this installment, 149.2S of 2019. On this ceremonial occasion for reflection, we have hoped to present a selection of essays suiting the landmark moment. In planning this issue, the key intention was to look back at where we have been as an organization and as a journal, to observe how things have changed over time, and look forward to where we may be heading.1The four pieces in the first section, Past and Present, address where we have been and ... • Opening the Gates: The American Philological Association Becomes the
           Society for Classical Studies 1969–2018
    • Abstract: when the society for classical studies began to devise a series of programs to celebrate its 150th year, the Sesquicentennial Committee decided to include not only an historical account of the Society's beginnings as the American Philological Association,1 but also an extended chronicle of the sweeping changes of the last half-century. Previous quinquagenary narratives were essentially annalistic reports on the doings of the Board of Directors and the locations of the annual meetings, with nary a human voice recorded (Moore 1919; Shero 1964). When I was approached to write up the last half-century, I felt that we needed to include some personal histories of the events that have so transformed our organization. To ... Read More

  • Progress and Precarity: 150 years of TAPA
    • Abstract: This paper surveys the contents of TAPA as the curated record of the professional association, the Society for Classical Studies, originally named the American Philological Association. The project grew out of a discussion at a meeting of the Research and Publications committee in January 2018, when then President Joe Farrell proposed a demographic survey of the published authors of articles in TAPA. We trace the changing demographics of authors published in TAPA, using a mailed survey covering fifty years of TAPA, 1968–2017 (the complete 2018 volume was not available when we mailed the e-surveys) and compiling data for authors 1869–1967.1To be sure, the series (now journal) TAPA, like any archive, reflects the ... • Expanding Our Professional Embrace: The American Philological
           Association/Society for Classical Studies 1970–2019
    • Abstract: like other contributions to this volume, my paper considers significant developments in the organization formerly called the American Philological Association, and recently renamed the Society for Classical Studies, over the past half-century. Yet I will also occasionally cast a backward glance to 1869–1969, the first century of the APA/SCS, to document what I have termed its expanding professional embrace, an effort at diversifying leadership and scholarship to more fully reflect its membership, an effort from which I as well as others have abundantly benefited. My essay draws on my research into some significant demographic changes in our profession and in the association over its whole history as well as on ... Read More

  • What Do Classicists Think' Perspectives on Politics, Scholarship, and
           Disciplinary Crisis
    • Abstract: in 1988, amy richlin, as part of her work for the women's classical Caucus (WCC), sent questionnaires to an assortment of members of the American Philological Association (APA) and a few other relevant figures,1 to canvas their opinions on subjects pertaining to the present state and likely future of classical studies. Richlin published the results of this informal survey2 in both an issue of the WCC Newsletter3 and as a contribution to the 1989 edited collection Classics: A Discipline and Profession in Crisis'4 When analyzing the responses to her questionnaire, Richlin noted, inter alia, a palpable sense of "cognitive dissonance,"5 as various classical scholars demonstrated considerable optimism about their own ... • American Philological Associations: Latin and Amerindian Languages
    • Abstract: at the first ever preliminary meeting of the american philological Association in New York on November 13th 1868 it was agreed that the Association should accommodate the whole field of philological investigation, including sections on "American aboriginal languages," Oriental, Modern European and English languages and literatures, as well as those of classical Latin and Greek.1 By the 1880s, however, the Association and its journal came to specialize in the linguistic and literary study of Latin and Greek, and that focus has remained—without the connections between American languages and classical philology ever having been considered. The object of this paper is to highlight the interaction, in sixteenth-century ...            Medea
    • Abstract: "The future woman must have a life work and economic independence. She must have knowledge. She must have the right of motherhood at her own discretion. The present mincing horror at free womanhood must pass if we are ever to be rid of the bestiality of free manhood; not by guarding the weak in weakness do we gain strength, but by making weakness free and strong."the quest of the silver fleece (1911) was william edward burghardt Du Bois' first and, I would say, sorely underappreciated novel about love, learning, and the Negro Problem. Du Bois adapts the Argonautic myth to offer his solution to the practical, financial, and political challenges involved in educating African Americans, especially in the south. The ... Read More

  • When Classics Gets Creative: From Research to Practice
    • Abstract: there is currently an explosion in interest in creative reworkings of the ancient world.1 From fiction, with Madeline Miller's Orange-prizewinning Song of Achilles (2012) and best-selling Circe (2018) to television drama with the BBC's Troy: Fall of a City (2018) and Netflix's Roman Empire (2016–19), theater (Kristin Scott Thomas as Electra in Frank McGuiness' adaptation of Sophocles in 2014), independent film and Hollywood (with Pompeii and two Hercules blockbusters released in 2014), the stories of the ancient world "find themselves centre stage once again."2 Demand for books, media, films, television series and video games that restage and engage with the classical world is high. The latest video game in the ... Read More

  • Contradiction in Works and Days and the Early Greek Capacity for Seeing
           Things Separately
    • Abstract: hesiod's works and days is a text about whose coherence interpreters do not agree. Some scholars have tended to see Hesiod as developing his poem primarily through association, as one aspect of the topic at hand suggests another. In this view, there may be no logical connection between different sections.1 Indeed, the poem's logic is often not easy, since transitions from one topic to another are sometimes abrupt and not clearly marked. Its first part is an extended sermon on the need for justice and hard work instead of cheating as a way to wealth, but then it suddenly turns to advice about agriculture, and then to ritual details and lucky and unlucky days. It is clearly not "unified" in the classical sense ... Read More

  • Assuming the Puella
    • Abstract: in the last hundred years, the study of various areas within Classics has transformed the field. As we may reflect on different waves of critical inquiry in Classics, I wanted to offer for this anniversary issue a case study on how Roman elegiac poetry has evolved, focusing on the elusive figure of the puella in Roman poetry. Our fundamental understanding of who and what the puella is and of her relation to the speaking subject in elegiac poetry has been radically transformed. The speed of these transformations has at times seemed dizzying. Two comforting mythologies are often offered to explain this phenomenon: one conservative, the other progressive. In the present paper, I will offer a third position, which is ... Read More

  • Can Modern Greek Encounters Help Classics Go Global and Become More
           Inclusive'
    • Abstract: in 2018, i moved to king's college london, where i joined the Department of Classics and Centre for Hellenic Studies. Prior to this transatlantic move, I had spent twenty-eight years in departments of Classics in the United States and had seen the worlds and workings of private as well as public institutions of American higher education. The word that captures the transition best is the word "impact"—and impact that is inclusive and global in its focus. Where, when, how, and why do the Classics have impact (rather than "relevance," in the US academic sphere)' Inclusive impact' Do the Classics make a lasting difference' Can the impact of a Humanities discipline even be measured with methods and tools devised for the ... • The Power of Forgetting
    • Abstract: "regarder, c'est-à-dire oublier les noms des choses que l'on voit."few of my students would fail to recognize that quotation, which came to me as to many as the title of Lawrence Weschler's luminous essay on the contemporary minimalist artist Robert Irwin a generation ago, Seeing Is Forgetting the Name of the Thing One Sees. In the classroom, it usually precedes my asking a question in the form of, "If you couldn't call it the Roman empire, what would you call it'" as a device for breaking the crust of habit, for ceasing to take what we know for granted. As pedagogical technique, de-naming and re-expressing can be very effective. What if we took that practice seriously in applying it to the professional aspirations ... Read More
